Dear Board of Supervisors,
As a broad coalition of community organizations and individuals, we are writing to ask Sacramento County to engage and partner with community members to meaningfully address racism as a public health crisis. The County can do this by codifying the role of an advisory body and giving departments across the County the resources they need to do community outreach.
In 2020, Sacramento County declared racism a public health crisis. This was an important acknowledgement that racism shows up in the systems and structures that people interact with, leading to reduced life expectancy and quality of life. Since that time, the County has taken some steps to address the crisis, such as forming the Health and Racial Equity Unit and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Cabinet. While these actions are a step in the right direction, real progress toward racial equity can only be achieved in partnership with impacted communities. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are most directly impacted by the public health crisis of racism. Meaningfully partnering with impacted communities requires consistent action, intention, and resources.
The undersigned request is that the Board of Supervisors, in partnership with relevant County staff, codify the role of community in the county’s efforts to address racism as a public health crisis. Additionally, the undersigned request is for increased and continued funding for county departments engaging in community outreach including but not limited to: Public Health, Human Assistance, and Children, Family and Adult Services.
In Community,
Individuals and Organizations across Sacramento County
